Murder By The Clock

An eerie early-talkie horror-thriller, Murder by the Clock spends most of its time in a cemetery. The matriarch (Blanche Frederici) of a wealthy family is haunted by the notion that she'll be buried alive. To avoid this contingency, she has a horn installed in the family mausoleum, to be activated in case she arises from her casket. The lady is murdered, and shortly after her internment the horn blows at regular intervals. Each time the horn is heard, the dead woman is seen wandering the cemetery, and each time one of her relatives winds up dead. These "supernatural" events are actually being orchestrated by a covetous family member (there's a large legacy involved of course), who uses the services of several homicidal confederates.

Irving Pichel is at his most frightening as a simple-minded man who fantisizes about killing people. Cast includes: William "Stage" Boyd as Lt. Valcour, Lilyan Tashman as Laura Endicott, Irving Pichel as Philip Endicott, Regis Toomey as Officer Cassidy and Sally O'Neil as Jane.

Considered by many to be one of top three old dark house movies of all time.

Lilyan Tashman sizzles in a "Lady Macbeth" role August 14, 2009

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because background music would have helped considerably.

Apart from that it was an excellent horror / thriller, that
soaked up the atmosphere from the new cycle of eerie and atmospheric horror films that were then taking the movie public by storm.

Lilyan Tashman was excellent as a "Lady Macbeth" type character, who fascinated every man that came in contact with her.

There was also a subplot involving Regis Toomey and Sally O'Neal but fortunately it was never allowed to get in the way of the main story.

There are hidden passages, an eerie family crypt and a blowing horn that must have frightened movie audiences out of their wits.

Irving Pichel is just so scary and menacing as Phillip. Because it is a pre-code things don't always go to plan. I won't give away the ending but you will be surprised.
