The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because background music would have helped considerably.

Apart from that it was an excellent horror / thriller, that soaked up the atmosphere from the new cycle of eerie and atmospheric horror films that were then taking the movie public by storm.

Lilyan Tashman was excellent as a "Lady Macbeth" type character, who fascinated every man that came in contact with her.

There was also a subplot involving Regis Toomey and Sally O'Neal but fortunately it was never allowed to get in the way of the main story.

There are hidden passages, an eerie family crypt and a blowing horn that must have frightened movie audiences out of their wits.

Irving Pichel is just so scary and menacing as Phillip. Because it is a pre-code things don't always go to plan. I won't give away the ending but you will be surprised.
