  No One Man

No One Man”, features Carole Lombard in one of her typical early 1930s features. She plays divorcee Penelope “Nep” Newbold, a rich fun loving member of the idle Palm Beach set.

She meets Dr Paul Lukas(Academy Award Winner “Watch On The Rhine”) who tries to give her life some meaning, but instead she marries polo-playing Ricardo Cortez(The Maltese Falcon circa 1931) who eventually succumbs to a weak heart, Nep resumes with Doctor Lukas.

Will Carole finally adapt to his way of life? As in most of her films of this era, Carole has a great opportunity to model several glamorous outfits designed by Travis Benton, the dean of the Paramount costume department

This 1932 film was directed by sometime actor, sometime director Lloyd Corrigan, most known for his bumbling portrayal of Arthur Manleder in the Boston Blackie movies of the 1940s . Sidney Buchman (To The Ends Of The Earth) wrote the script taken from a Rupert Hughes story

Description

"No One Man" (1933, Carole Lombard, Ricardo Cortez, Paul Lukas) is typical of its era: it features a free-spirited, forward-thinking young socialite experimenting with the amenities and acoutrements of free love. Additionally, the heroine ends the film by seeing the error of her ways and settling down with the good, honest man she could have had all along, had she but known.

It is probable that you have seen this scenario countless times before - but never have you seen the role of the socialite acted with such panache and spirit as Carole Lombard. Miss Lombard brings a barely-suppressed mirth and gaiety to the plot's tear-jerking conventions, and manages to make the film, rather than a standard potboiler, instead into a light and fast-paced romantic soufflé.

Her performance as Penelope is impeccable, and she never hits a false note in her interpretation. Miss Lombard is this film's remarkable feature. The two leading men (Ricardo Cortez as a cad, Paul Lukas as a good doctor)seeme rather bland. Why would such a bright woman as Penelope would have interest in two such gents?

''No One Man" sounds like it would be a standard soap opera- daring, risqué, original- definitely worth a look, especially for Carole Lombard fans. And, for those viewers who are not particular fans of Miss Lombard - after watching this film, you will be.
