I gave this film 3 stars because it is a chance to see the beautiful but notorious Mary Nolan in a first rate film.
When talking pictures first came in, there were quite a few of these "tea-cup" dramas made and they don't really hold up today.
Acting appears stiff and wooden but to me the highlight of the film is Ruth Chatterton and Mary Nolan. Ruth Chatterton (who definately deserves to be re-discovered) plays Kathryn, whose husband Robert (Clive Brook) is having a sparkling affair with Ann Marie (Mary Nolan).
There are some quite snappy lines and being a W. Somerset Maugham play it is resolved quite wittily.
Chatterton is excellent of course but Mary Nolan is wonderful. She more than held her own with the stellar cast and proved she could have been a top star if scandal hadn't got in her way!!!
